Review on the Almaty Programme of Action, Region Europe and Asia 5-7 March 2013, Vientiane, Lao PDR
The Euro-Asia Regional Review meeting on the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action for the Landlocked Developing Countries was held on 5-7 March 2013 in Vientiane, Lao PDR, as part of the preparatory process for the Comprehensive Ten-Year Review Conference of the Almaty Programme of Action to be held in 2014.
The objective of the meeting was to review and take stock of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action at a regional level in Asia and Europe including identification of the major achievements, constraints experienced, emerging challenges and the opportunities presented; and to identify policy recommendations and actions that need to be implemented to enable the Euro-Asian LLDCs to fully participate in the global trade and realize their full potential for sustainable and inclusive development.
Hosted by the Government of Laos, in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and UN-OHRLLS, the three-day consultation brought together representatives from the 14 Euro-Asian LLDCs, transit countries, development partners, private sector and civil society.
The International Think Tank for LLDCs participated at this meeting and briefed other LLDCs on the activities of the International Think Tank.
Furthermore the Interim Director of the International Think Tank, Mr. Erdenetsogt Odbayar, explained that this think tank was “not only a Mongolian think tank, but it is a think tank for all LLDCs”
Mr. Erdenetsogt Odbayar also called on all LLDCs to participate more actively in the research activities of the think tank.
At its conclusion, the meeting adopted the Outcome Document: Vientiane Consensus, which reflects LLDCs renewed commitment in addressing development gaps and integrating their countries more closely with the region’s growth momentum.
