DEVELOPING COUNTRIES”
Date: April 20, 2017
Time: 13:30-19:00
Venue: 3rd floor Conference Hall, United Nations House, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Background
The International Think Tank for Landlocked Developing Countries (ITT for LLDCs) and University of Sydney confirmed their mutual interest in collaborating in areas affecting Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and signed the Memorandum of Understanding in 2015 in order to explore collaborative opportunities in research and other activities to jointly support knowledge sharing among LLDCs and South-South Cooperation.
In the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding both Institutions agreed to implement a joint research project in 2016 with the ultimate goal of contributing to the successful implementation of the SDGs and the Vienna Programme of Action.
The joint research project document which was established in 2016, defined the scope of the project and both sides agreed to develop a total of 3 research papers on transport and access, trade and development as well as ICT and connectivity issues of LLDCs respectively under the overall theme “Exploring Connectivity in Landlocked Developing Countries”.
Purpose
This joint conference will introduce the final draft reports of the joint research project and will encourage debate among government officials, researchers, academics, think tanks, private sector representatives and others interested in trade and development related research. The representatives and researchers from our distinguished partner organization, University of Sydney, will present the findings of their respective research papers on International Trade, ICT-Connectivity and Transport.
Participants will have the opportunity to witness 3 presentations in total.
1. Session 1: International Trade Connectivity
Session 1 will revise the ‘Dutch disease’ phenomenon within the context of Laos, the mineral-rich LLDC in Southeast Asia. Moreover, the study explores the impact of foreign direct investment on economic diversification in Laos, and further explores the effects of economic diversification on economic growth, international trade position, and food security.
2. Session 2: ICT-Connectivity
Session 2 will introduce the findings of a case study of the ICT infrastructure development journey of Azerbaijan and draw insights into how they achieved high Internet penetration rate that approaches the level of developed countries. Moreover, this session will not only explain the four steps of Azerbaijan’s technology leap in ICT, but also the economic and social implications of those steps as well.
3. Session 3: Transport Connectivity
Session 3 will focus on Central Asia’s LLDCs and the importance of aviation liberalization for them. This study uses observed industry panel data spanning from 2007 to 2015 to quantify the market potential and predict airline route entry in counterfactual scenarios, so that different liberalization schemes can be simulated. Empirical results identified substantial market potential in Central Asia – China aviation market in terms of serviceable routes upon further liberalization.
